When we published Labrador Cinema in 2022, we never intended that to be our final word. Indeed we have long planned to curate and share as many of the films as we can. Now the day has come! We are launching a Labrador Cinema playlist on YouTube. This allows us a way to incorporate online material from agencies like the National Film Board of Canada, the Library of Congress, and British Pathé, all into one playlist. The YouTube platform isn’t perfect, as we would like to be able to give more commentary on the films, but we think this is a good first step in getting things together and arranging them chronologically. Now anyone interested in Labrador films will have a one-stop shop to explore what’s available for ready viewing.
We don’t have a programmatic approach to this. For the time being, we will share additional video in fits and stops. Pease check back often! Also, if you have ideas for how we might curate these films, we would love to hear from you! There may, for example, be opportunities to use our website to curate individual titles. And in cases where we are uploading film ourselves, we can use the full range of YouTube’s descriptive capacity.
You might also notice that the playlist is part of Mark’s YouTube channel. Mark has been working to share what he can from his personal collection of Newfoundland and Labrador film via this channel, and some of this content can be found in other playlists he has created. For example Atlantic Film’s Labrador (1963) is also part of a playlist on Atlantic Films as well as another playlist that accompanies an essay he recently wrote for Newfoundland Quarterly called “Aerial Moving Imagery of Newfoundland and Labrador, 1937-1972“. The idea is to allow you to see how these films belong to other technical, stylistic and historical groupings. We hope you enjoy!
