Advocacy

We are a business, but we are also part of our community. Through advocacy and participation in community life, we strive to help build up local industries and capacity. We also pursue our passions for records, community culture, and the arts.

Books

Our love for Northern books extends beyond our own titles! We advocate for Northern writers and books in the North.

In spring 2024 we were very happy to help launch the Words of Warmth Literary Festival in Happy Valley-Goose Bay to do just this, contributing to proposing and developing the concept and playing a leading role on the committee to organize and deliver festival events. Words of Warmth was funded by ArtsNL through a Year of the Arts grant to the Eastern Labrador Arts Alliance.

Records

We advocate for Northern records. Our work on this front is most concretely laid out in our 2023 publication, Remotely Useful: Practical Lessons for Northern Community Archiving, a free resource that we published with the Council on Library and Information Resources.

In addition to promoting community-led practices for keeping Northern records, we contribute to broader conversations on all things related to records and the North. We often speak publicly about our work in this field and are always happy to share our knowledge in talks, interviews and workshops.

As advocated for Northern records, we are also committed to fining the right home for Northern records. If you are looking to donate materials to Labrador archives and communities, we can help you find the right home. Them Days and the Labrador Campus are great places to start. There are also many others!

Film

Our work together began with Labrador film. We speak, teach, and curate Labrador film, and we occasionally produce film in the region. We are happy to connect with anyone working on film in Labrador.

We maintain close ties with the provincial film industry and regularly participate in forums like the Nickel Independent Film Festival, the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival, and the initiatives of PictureNL.
